Prosecutor: North Haledon Couple Bought Food Stamps From The Poor

NORTH HALEDON, N.J.– A pizzeria owner from North Haledon and his wife bought electronic food stamp cards from poor families and used them for themselves, authorities charged.

Raymond T. Totino, 66, paid 60 cents on the dollar for Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards that he used for his Paterson pizzeria and 69-year-old Carole R. Totino used for groceries, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes said Thursday.

The Passaic County Board of Social Services issues the electronic cards to help low-income recipients buy food, she said.

Valdez's Financial Crimes Unit conducted the investigation, assisted by agents from the Northeast Regional Office of the Inspector General for the Department of Agriculture.
