Drug and warrant detectives working an investigation stopped the Acura MDX on Temple Street around 8 p.m. Monday after seeing 26-year-old Chayanne Hidalgo get in moments earlier, Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik said.
"As detectives approached the vehicle, they could smell a strong odor of raw marijuana emanating from [it]," Berdnik said.
Hidalgo, in turn, "voluntarily surrendered a small baggie of marijuana," he said.
Hidalgo was taken into custody, charged with marijuana possession and released.
Detectives returned to 193 Temple Street, where they again smelled marijuana while speaking with Luis Rosario, 26.
They also noticed a blue vial of pot on a table, Berdnik said.
A search turned up 246 small baggies of cocaine, three medium-sized bags containing five ounces of cocaine, a pair of scales used to weigh drugs for sale and several zip-locking bags for packaging them, the sheriff said.
The total value of all the drugs was about $11,000, he said.
Rosario was arrested on a host of drug charges and sent to the Passaic County Jail pending a bail hearing. He remained held there with no bail on Thursday.
