John Fahey of Pompton Plains was headed north on Newark-Pompton Turnpike when his 2008 GMC Savana van left the roadway, mounted the curb, traveled across the sidewalk and a front lawn and hit a row of trees just after 4:30 a.m., Capt. Laurence Martin said.
Fahey, who was ejected, was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.
Responders included township police, the Wayne Memorial First Aid Squad and paramedics from Chilton Memorial Hospital, the captain said.
Anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to contact the Wayne Police Traffic Bureau: (973) 633-3520.
