YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A jitney bus driver failed to stop in time, causing a chain-reaction crash on eastbound Route 4 in Paramus that sent five people to the hospital this afternoon, none with serious injuries, police said.

A Mercedes Benz van driven by a 58-year-old Maybrook, N.Y. man was stopped behind a four-door Honda Civic driven by a 45-year-old Clifton woman when the jitney rammed it from behind, sending it into the sedan, beneath the IKEA Drive overpass just before 12:30 p.m., Capt. Anthony Savastano told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this afternoon.

The first two drivers were taken to the hospital, as was the 55-year-old Bronx jitney driver and two of his passengers — a 34-year-old woman and 46-year-old man, both of Paterson, Savastano said. An 18-year-old woman on the jitney declined medical treatment, he said.

At least three ambulances responded — HUMC, The Valley Hospital and FUCHS E.M.S. & Medical Transportation Service.

The crash clogged area roadways and backed up Route 4 traffic into Fair Lawn.
