Officers Eudy Ramos, Jonathan Bustios and Frank Toledo were patrolling the area of 12th Avenue and E 23rd Street when they approached a group of men just before 5 a.m., Police Director Jerry Speziale said.

One of them, 25-year-old Shaquan Capron, took off "while gripping his waistband and looking back at the officers," Speziale said.

They chased him to the rear of 323 12th Avenue -- where the director said Capron pulled out a silver handgun and tossed it over a wall.

Capron tried to fight off the officers, who tackled and restrained him, Speziale said.

They then recovered a Taurus 9MM handgun loaded with 12 rounds, he said.

Capron, who was released from state prison in late June of last year after serving 13 months for dealing drugs, remained held in the Passaic County Jail on Friday pending further court action.

He's charged with various weapons offenses -- including being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm -- as well as resisting arrest.

“The arrest is indicative of the dangers the officers face and their dedication to making a safer city,” Speziale said.
