Witnesses told officers and detectives responding to a 10:40 p.m. call of someone shot at at Market and East 31 streets that the 19-yearoldvictim was taken to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in a private vehicle, Police Director Jerry Speziale said.
The shooter fled in a blue Acura, they told police, while providing the license plate number.
Hearing the subsequent broadcast alert, Officer Cesar Heyaime spotted and followed the car on westbound Route 80, then onto Squirrelwood Road back toward Paterson, Speziale said.
Backups joined Heyaime in stopping the car on the exit ramp, the director said.
Three occupants were taken into custody -- two of whom were charged in connection with the shooting following an investigation by Detective Sgt. Anthony Hyatt and Detectives Christopher Ravallese and Joehan Suarez of the Ceasefire Unit. The third was released.
The accused shooter, 22-year-old Ricardo Goris, was charged with attempted murder and weapons offenses.
Meanwhile, Julian Jiminez, 23, was charged with assault and endangerment.
The victim was reported in stable condition with a gunshot wound in the upper leg, Speziale said.
Records showed Goris was being held Saturday morning in the Passaic County Jail pending a hearing.
The jail didn't have Jiminez listed.
