Members of the street crime unit rolled up on a group of men who were drinking and blocking the path of pedestrians on Stout Street near North Main around 7:15 p.m. Monday, Police Director Jerry Speziale said.
A "shots fired" report had come from the neighborhood just hours earlier, he said.
As the detectives got out of their car, a man identified as Andrea Hargrove, 43, put his hands in the air and told them he was carrying a gun, Speziale said.
It was a Ruger .40-caliber semi-automatic weapon, the police director said.
Meanwhile, another man -- identified as 38-year-old Lateef Scott -- took off, he said.
Detective Anthony Castronova and Sgt. Richard LaTrecchia chased him down and took Scott into custody after a violent struggle, Speziale said.
He was carrying a Stoeger Arms revolver in his waistband, the director said.
A third man was given a summons and released, he said.
Hargrove and Scott were processed at police headquarters on various weapons charges -- including being felons in possession of firearms -- and taken to the Passaic County Jail, Speziale said.
The recovered weapons were being sent to the State Police lab to determine where they came from and whether they'd been used in any reported shootings.
"The members of the Street Crime Unit will continue to be strategically deployed citywide in the continued in our continued effort to curtail gun violence within designated 'hot spot' zones," Speziale said.
"The men and women of the unit have really stepped up their game and are working tirelessly in making a safer city," he added.
