PCSD Officer Patrick Holt tried pulling the car over Presidential Boulevard around 4 a.m. Thursday, but the driver, Clarence Chambers, hit the gas instead, Berdnik said.

The chase continued onto Ryle Avenue before Chambers made a right onto Matlock Street and crash the vehicle into a parked car, the sheriff said.

Chambers bailed and ran but was caught by Holt near a West Broadway food store, he said.

Holt found Chambers carrying a loaded Taurus 9mm handgun, along with three bricks of heroin and 39 prescription pills, Bernick said.

Chambers remained held in the Passaic County Jail pending further court action on charges of eluding, resisting arrest, threatening a law enforcement officer and weapons and drug possession.

He also received several summonses, the sheriff said.
