James P. McGuinness, 32, of Andover Township in Sussex County had a Glock 26 loaded with 10 hollow-point bullets and an additional magazine with 10 more, Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik said.
The driver of the silver Camry, 49-year-old Derek Ryba of Little Falls, hit the gas and sped off when Bureau of Narcotics Detectives tried to him just after 2 p.m. Thursday, Berdnik said.
Ryba eventually came to a complete stop on the westbound highway in Wayne near Fairfield the sheriff said.
In the car was a plastic cup containing and alcoholic beverage, Berdnik said, adding that Ryba appeared intoxicated. Officers arrested him on DWI and eluding charges, while issuing him several summonses, the sheriff said.
McGuinness was arrested on weapons and illegal ammunition possession charges after officers found him carrying the semi-automatic handgun and the ammo, Berdnik said. He remained held in the Passaic County Jail.
