Passaic Sheriff: Pedaler Caught Peddling Heroin

PATERSON, N.J. -- A bicycle-riding dealer caught flagging down drivers was busted with 500 envelopes of heroin, Passaic County Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik said.

Sheriff's detectives acting on a tip found 39-year-old Richard Garcia "beckoning vehicles as they passed" in the area of Mercer and Keen streets in Paterson, Berdnik said.

At one point, he got off the bike and retrieved a white rectangular a brick of 50 envelopes that he stuffed into his backpack, the sheriff said.

The officers moved in, found ten bricks and $387 in cash and arrested Garcia, he said.

They later learned that he owes $7,564 in child support and was also wanted on a warrant out of the city of Passaic, Berdnik said.

A judge ordered Garcia held in the Passaic County Jail pending a detention hearing on various drug charges.
