Off-Duty Paterson Police Officer Indicted In Fatal Hit-And-Run

PATERSON, N.J. -- A grand jury in Paterson indicted an off-duty city police officer with leaving the scene of a fatal car crash and endangering an injured victim, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes announced Thursday night.

Jose Urena, Jr., 30, of North Haledon was behind the wheel of a vehicle that struck 23-year-old Jaquill Fields at North 4th and Temple streets in the city on June 16.

Fields was taken to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, where he died of his injuries.

Hospital and Medical Center where he later died as a result of his injuries.

Valdes's Vehicular Homicide Unit identified and recovered the vehicle and produced the case that led to Tuesday's indictment.
