The pair took off in a black 2008 Acura when Sgt. Joseph Delaney approached them at Garwood Court North and asked what they were doing, Capt. Darren Sucorowski said this afternoon.

Delaney went after them while alerting backups.

Officers Robert Napolitano and Radoslaw Kata stopped the car on Ray Street at Columbus Avenue a short time later, Sucorowski said.

Eric Diaz, 29, of Bloomfield and 25-year-old Jeremy Vandunk of Paterson were charged with theft. Diaz also was charged with a weapons offense for having a collapsible baton and Vandunk with drug possession for a small amount of marijuana.

Both were being held on $10,000 each in the Bergen County Jail.
