New police officer added, auxiliary sergeant promoted in Fair Lawn

SHOUT OUTS: Fair Lawn’s finest added a new officer to its police department and a new sergeant to its auxiliary police.

John Kelly, 45, was sworn in as a police officer during Tuesday night’s council meeting.

Kelly, who was an officer in Paterson for 12 years, was graduated from Passaic County Technical Institute and John Jay College. He’ll start in the patrol division, Sgt. Brian Metzler said.

That same night, 67-year-old Nicholas Magarelli was officially promoted to sergeant on the Fair Lawn Auxiliary Police.

Magarelli, who has been a member of the Auxiliary Police for five years, served in the U.S. Army and worked for Verizon for 38 years. He currently works for St. Anne’s Church in Fair Lawn.

Magarelli is the father of Fair Lawn Auxiliary Police Chief Nicholas Magarelli and Auxiliary Capt. James Magarelli.
