Special Police Officer Toddy Lyness was working a security detail at the theater when he saw the boy bleeding from facial injuries around 8:30 p.m. Friday, Lt. Robert Bracken said.

Lyness chased his attackers as they ran toward Nutley from the Route 3 mall and grabbed most of them with the help of Nutley police, Bracken said.

Arrested was 18-year-old Diana Valentina of Newark and taken into custody were two 14-year-old boys and three other boys -- ages 15, 16 and 17, all from Newark.

Two others got away with the proceeds, the lieutenant said.

Valentina was charged with robbery and resisting arrest and released. The juveniles were issued delinquency complaints charging them with the same offenses.
