Officer John Bonilla stopped the car on Kossuth Street at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, Lt. George Guzman said.
He learned that the front-seat passenger, Eshan Mcqueen -- who played for Paterson Eastside High School in the late 2000s before authorities charged him with selling crack to a coach -- was wanted for failing to pay $5,615 in child support and a warrant out of Paterson, Guzman said.
Mcqueen, took off, with Bonilla and Officer Chris Clavo close behind, the lieutenant said.
Six months ago, Mcqueen ran into the path of a Passaic County Sheriff's car while being chased for a robbery in which the victim lost use of an eye.
This time, he ran into a Kossuth Street backyard, where Clavo grabbed him, Guzman said.
Mcqueen "resisted arrest, during which Officer Clavo was struck in the knee and the neck," he said.
The officers quickly subdued him and took him into custody, the lieutenant said.
Clavo was briefly hospitalized for treatment of minor injuries and released, he said.
A judge ordered Mcqueen held on $25,000 bail in the Passaic County Jail, charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and obstruction.
