Fire chief orders Hawthorne strip mall evacuated due to snow, ice

BEYOND BERGEN: Hawthorne’s fire chief ordered the tenants of seven stores in a borough strip mall out until further notice today because of ice and snow damage to the roof.

Fire Chief Joseph Speranza required all to evacuate the mall at 1103 Goffle Road by 7 o’clock tonight.

Many had already begun closing when the order was given at 5 p.m.

Damage to vent pipes and electrical conduits were apparent this afternoon as firefighters from Hawthorne Company #2 used shovels and rakes from the bucket of their tower ladder truck in an attempt to remove snow from critical areas in the rear of the building.
