Police Capt. Robert Kneer and Officer Ian Manelis were driving past the area of 27th Street and Pellack Drive at nearly 2:30 a.m. yesterday when they noticed a commotion outside the Chase bank, Sgt. Brian Metzler said this afternoon.
After separating both men, the officers discovered that one had chased down the other and was holding him after his car was broken into on 27th Street, he said.
Identified as Emmanuel Bernard, 23, of Paterson, the accused thief was taken into custody.
A second suspect, 22-year-old Darling Alba, also of Paterson, was found on nearby Plaza Road at Rosalie Street by Officers Chris O’Shaughnessy and Kenneth Cavanaugh, with assistance from the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office’s K-9 Unit, Metzler said.
Both were carrying items stolen from the victim’s car, a second car and a clothing bin nearby, the sergeant said.
Bernard and Alba were being held on $50,000 bail each in the Bergen County Jail, charged with three counts of burglary and two counts of theft.
