Witnesses who followed them, calling police along the way, forced the 32-year-old career criminal from Paterson to stop the 2010 Dodge Challenger in the Riverside Square Mall parking lot, Teaneck Police Chief Robert Wilson said.
Although Archer bailed out, off-duty NJ State Police Trooper Joseph Brennan helped officers find him hiding among parked cars, the chief said.
The woman wasn’t harmed, he said.
Archer, who served prison time on drug convictions out of Passaic nearly a decade ago, was being held on $425,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with kidnapping, carjacking, and violating a restraining order.
He already was facing charges stemming from a pair of incidents, one in April and the other about a month ago, both in Teaneck. Police there charged him with driving while on the suspended list and hindering apprehension on Oct. 24.
Last year, federal marshals arrested Archer 11 days after a warrant was issued for his arrest on obstruction and hindering charges.
So Teaneck police knew who they were dealing with when they got the call Saturday night of a domestic dispute on Anna Street.
Wilson said Archer went up to the woman and tried to talk to her. As she tried to pull away, he said, Archer “opened the driver’s door and pushed the victim to the passenger seat.”
He then drove along Teaneck and onto Route 4W, the chief said.
Archer has an initial Municipal Court appearance scheduled for Dec. 3.
