Driver In Wayne Crash Drove Into Oncoming Traffic On Purpose, Police Say

WAYNE, N.J. — Wayne police said a North Haledon man told them that he drove into traffic on purpose -- causing a crash that sent him and two other people to the hospital -- to scare other motorists after downing an unknown number of Xanax and Oxycodone pills.

Officers responding to the head-on crash at Beaumont Parkway and Raltzer Road at 10 p.m. Monday found a female passenger unconscious with facial injuries, Capt. Laurence Martin said.

They also found the driver, 38-year-old Leonardo Enrique, trying to stuff prescription pills that surrounded him down his pants, Martin said. They seized 10 Xanax, five Oxycodone and additional prescription drugs, the captain said.

The other driver was injured but could walk, he said.

All three were taken to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, Martin said.

Enrique was charged with assault by auto, two counts of DWI, reckless driving, having drugs in a vehicle and illegal prescription pill possession.
