Jurors in February convicted David Correa of attempted kidnapping, aggravated assault and weapons offenses.
Correa assaulted the victim with a wooden baseball bat and attempted to kidnap her from her residence on July 8, 2013 in Paterson, prosecutors said.
She told jurors during the trial that she was left home to go to work when Correa hit her in the head with a wooden baseball bat and dragged her to her vehicle in an attempt to force her inside.
"As she fought and screamed, Correa stuffed the wig she was wearing into her mouth in an effort to muffle her cries for help," Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes said Monday. "He fled the scene once her neighbors came to her aid."
Responding officers found the bloodied bat and a backpack that contained Correa's cellphone and two pair of handcuffs, she said.
Assistant Prosecutor LaToyia K. Jenkins handled the case for the state.
