Bill to protect NJ stalking victims advances

PUBLIC SAFETY: Stalking in violation of a restraining order could become a third-degree crime in New Jersey — with possible jail or prison time and sizable fines — if a bill advanced by the state Senate Judiciary Committee this morning is approved by the Legislature.

“Violations of stalking restraining orders are both common and often associated with significant danger to victims,” said the sponsor of S-2540/A-3841, state Sen. Kevin O’Toole (R-Bergen, Essex, Morris, Passaic).

“We need to give survivors all the protection we can to assure that they won’t be re-victimized,” O’Toole said.
