Corrections Officer Gwendolyn Broughton, 53, was taken into custody at 8:15 a.m. Monday and charged with theft, Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Passaic Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik announced that afternoon.

Broughton was a corrections officer from December 2011 through May 2016 and served for a period as treasurer of Local #197, Valdes and Berdnik said.

She used her access as treasurer to make “numerous unauthorized cash withdrawals from multiple accounts for her own personal gain,” they said.

Broughton was released on a summons to appear in court.

Meanwhile, an investigation was continuing.

“At this time, further information will not be released so as not to jeopardize the safety of persons involved or to jeopardize the investigation in progress,” Valdes and Berdnik said.
