With memories still fresh of a 20-year-old Teaneck man who fired shots in the mall before killing himself less than three months ago, Paramus Police Officer David Betancourt stopped a man walking on the lower level of the shopping center towards Macys.

In his waistband was what appeared to be a gun, Paramus Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg said this afternoon.

It turned out to be a BB gun, he said.

Devin Rivera, 18, of Clifton told police “he was only carrying the weapon because he was afraid of other individuals who might also be at the shopping center,” Ehrenberg said.

Backup officers joined Betancourt in seizing Rivera, who was charged with possession of an imitation firearm, the chief said. He was released without bail pending a court hearing.
