Accountant, 72, shoots himself at Fairfield office building used by IRS

EXCLUSIVE: A 72-year-old accountant shot himself with a stolen handgun Wednesday afternoon at a Fairfield office where the IRS temporarily leases space, CLIFFVIEW PILOT has learned.

However, there was no connection whatsoever to the agency — and, in fact, no IRS employees were even in the building at the time.

The Smolin Lupin employee pointed the .38-caliber weapon at his chest and fired around 3 p.m., a source with direct knowledge of the incident told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The bullet went through his rib cage and exited near his shoulder blade, the source said.

Just up the road from Essex County Airport, the Passaic Avenue site has office space leased by the IRS to conduct business during tax season.

Smolin Lupin also has offices in Red Bank and in Jupiter and Boca Rotan, FL.

The gunman was reported in stable condition, under police guard, at St. Joseph’s Reginal Medical Center in Paterson.

The firearm was reported stolen out of Indiana, a source told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
