Ganguzza was born and lived in Passaic until he moved to Florida to enjoy his retirement. He was a proud Roman Catholic who attended and supported his church, Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Passaic, along with parishes in North Miami Beach and Pompano Beach, Florida.
He was an Army infantryman during World War II, serving in North Africa, Italy and France. He was awarded the Purple Heart, among other military honors. He then began working as a foreman at the Allen B. DuMont Laboratories in Passaic, building early television sets.
In 1954, Ganguzza joined the Passaic Fire Department serving on both Engine 1 and Engine 5. After 32 years, he retired as a lieutenant. He also worked at his cousins' business, the Valley Fair Stores in Paramus and Irvington, until his retirement. He was also a member of the Passaic Wolverines, a neighborhood social club. An avid tennis player for 40 years, he also loved to play golf, particularly in his later years. He also played on various PFD sports teams.
He is survived by his sons, Mark and his wife Andrea, and Jerry and his wife Anne; grandchildren Kristen and her husband Rob Foster, Ciri and her husband Scott Mitchell, and Sophia; great-grandchildren Emmett Foster and Robert "Beau" Foster; nieces and nephews; and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Ganguzza was predeceased by his wife of nearly 67 years, Lee (Alfieri) Ganguzza.
Visiting hours will be from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 16, at the Macagna-Diffily-Onorato Funeral Home, 41 Ames Ave., in Rutherford. A funeral mass will be said at 10 a.m. on Friday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, in Passaic, followed by a private interment.
