The bridge, which goes over a brook, “has probably never been replaced since it first was installed, and the county is in the process of replacing all the culverts and bridges, and that’s one that everyone never really thought about,” Goldberg said. “But the county said there were structural issues and [it] needed to be replaced.”
Saab Ghattas, principal bridge engineer for Passaic, said the bridge will be expanded and a 6-foot sidewalk will be added on the north side for children to walk to Jefferson Elementary School.
The closure is “going to cause some of the school parents problems whose kids used to cross the bridge to get to walk up to Jefferson School and now have to find another way to go. Some of the buses that took that bridge will have to find another way to go. And the commuters would use it as a cut-through to avoid the light at Goffle Hill will have to find another way to go.”
Ghattas said a temporary pedestrian bridge will be installed this weekend to mitigate concerns.
