Hearing Set On Passaic Community Development Block Grant Applications

PASSAIC COUNTY, N.J. -- The Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders will host a public hearing on applications for this year’s Community Development Block Grant program June 14 at the County Administration Building, 401 Grand St., Paterson.

The grants are one of the longest-running programs from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which allows local governing bodies to pay for projects, such as affordable housing, infrastructure improvements, and anti-poverty programs. 

In 2015, Passaic County received $800,000 from the program. The applications for this year’s projects include: 

  • Storm drain work on Leary Avenue in Bloomingdale ($75,000)
  • Maintenance and improvements to Belmont Avenue Town Square Park in Haledon ($100,000)
  • Repaving of Eighth Avenue in Hawthorne ($50,000)
  • Installation of ADA-complaint curb ramps in Pompton Lakes ($44,560)
  • Repairs on North 10th Street in Prospect Park ($100,000)
  • Storm and sewer drains in Totowa ($100,000)
  • Road reconstruction and money to reconstruct 80-year-old water mains in Wanaque ($75,000)
  • Sewer project on Glover Avenue in Woodland Park ($57,000)
  • Counseling services for disabled and senior citizens to Catholic and Family Community Services ($20,000) 
  • Assessment and case management services for disabled and senior citizens to New Bridge Services ($12,135)
  • Counseling services for the Fair Housing Council of Northern NJ ($5,000)
  • Money to hire of an advocacy coordinator for child abuse victims at County Court Appointed Special Services ($10,000)

“The freeholders have partnered with our local municipalities to make significant and long-lasting improvements to Passaic County.” said Freeholder Director Theodore “TJ” Best. “We are looking forward to implementing this year’s round of applications for projects and infrastructure improvements.” 

Of the 16 municipalities in Passaic County, 12 have partnered with the county to secure money from this grant program. These municipalities include Bloomingdale, Haledon, Hawthorne, Little Falls, North Haledon, Pompton Lakes, Prospect Park, Ringwood, Totowa, Wanaque, West Milford and Woodland Park. 

“There is often a correlation between our most vulnerable and neediest citizens, and the place they live.” said Freeholder Hector Lora, chairman of the planning committee. “These improvements help people afford housing and gives people with disabilities the access they need to live normally, these improvements benefit everyone in the county.”
