'Safety Town' Returns To Wayne

WAYNE, N.J. -- Wayne will again have its "Safety Town" program, in one-week sessions throughout July, to help educate incoming kindergartners about home, school and community safety.

The program will consist of week-long sessions, from July 5-29, from 9-11 a.m. The first week is just four days, since it's closed for the Fourth of July, and so the cost is $40, instead of the $50 of the other week-long sessions. 

Over the one-week period, children will participate in fun learning activities which simulate actual situations. Students will travel through a model town which includes buildings, streets and traffic signals. Wayne Teachers, employees, teen volunteers, and a variety of adult presenters will lead the activities.

Here are some of the other planned activities and issues to be covered:

  • a bubble launch
  • pedestrian safety with crossing guard
  • sign and signal recognition
  • traffic safety with Otto the Auto
  • bicycle safety with police officer
  • boating and water safety with a lifeguard
  • ambulance with an EMT
  • stranger awareness with the mounted police
  • safety outdoors
  • playground safety
  • allergy awareness
  • fire safety and burn prevention
  • bus safety and bus trip
  • visit to a firehouse and
  • graduation ceremony

If kids want to meet incoming classmates, they can come the session earmarked for their school:

  • week one, July 5-8 -- Ryerson, A.P. Terhune and Pines Lake
  • week two, July 11-15 -- Packanack and Theunis Dey
  • week three, July 18-22 -- James Fallon and Randall Carter
  • week four, July 25- 29 -- JFK and Lafayette

You can register through CommunityPass, here, or visit the Youth Programs office at the Preakness School, 1006 Hamburg Turnpike, in the first office on the right. The program will be at James Fallon Elementary School, 51 Clifford Dr.

Potential volunteers can also register through the above CommunityPass link. A limited number will be accepted, and it requires a two-week commitment, either July 5-15 or July 18-29, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. each day. There will be an organizational meeting on Monday, June 6, for all registered volunteers, from 4-4:30 p.m., in James Fallon's cafeteria. Waitlisted volunteers are encouraged to come, as well.
