Schaer, who was joined by U.S. Sen. Cory Booker and U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrel, toured the facility and held a roundtable discussion on vocational training, workforce development and manufacturing. He said the bill, which would allocate $1.5 million in state funds, to be matched by federal funds, would allow employers to receive 50-75 percent of the salaries they pay to apprentices over five years as a means to boost economic development.
The bill will be introduced into the state Assembly and Senate.
It was not immediately clear when the measure will be introduced.
“We need to understand that there is no legislation on the state level or on the federal level that is going to be a total panacea for the problem, but we do recognize that we need to make steps forward,” Schaer said.
If enacted, the bill “will provide employers the necessary financial incentive to train men and women to take these jobs, to learn about these jobs in the most practical of levels,” Schaer said.
