Shots Fired Near Two Newark Schools: Police
Gunshots were fired near Newark schools on the afternoon of Monday, May 20, authorities said. At 3:35 p.m., police responded to South 11th Street and South Orange Avenue on a report of shots fired, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said. KIPP Rise Academy, a charter school for students from 5th grade to 8th grade, and West Side High School are located minutes from the shooting location. Police did not locate any gunshot victims, Fragé said. The investigation is ongoing, Fragé said.

Two Newark Teens Shot Near High School: Authorities
Two Newark teenagers were shot near West Side High School on Tuesday, March 26, authorities said. A 17-year-old and a 15-year-old boy were the victims of the shooting, Mayor Ras Baraka and Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said. The two teenagers were transported to University Hospital in Newark, authorities said. Gov. Phil Murphy said his office was coordinating with law enforcement. "Every student deserves to be safe at school," Murphy said. The incident remains under investigation, authorities said. Anyone with information is asked to call 1-877-695-8477.

Newark High School Students Injured In Hit-Run Bus Crash
Five students and two adults were injured in a hit-and-run school bus crash Saturday afternoon in Newark. The bus from was carrying 13 people including West Side High School students when it was struck at Springfield Avenue and South 11th Street by a black Audi SUV, a Newark police spokeswoman said. The Audi driver fled the scene and seven people reported pain, authorities said. Further details were not released.The incident remains under investigation.

Oprah Donates $500K To Newark High School
Oprah Winfrey surprised students at West Side HIgh School during a visit Friday night, when she pledged a half-million dollars to fund a signature initiative started by the school's principal. CBS 2 News reports that Winfrey was inspired to make the donation after she read about Principal Akbar Cook's "Lights On" initiative, under which the school remains open Friday nights to give students an alternative to the streets.
