Authorities in Newark are seeking the public's help in identifying a driver who they say drove away from police during a traffic stop. Police officers spotted a motorist driving with an expired temporary license plate in a 2003 Honda Civic on South Street around 12:40 a.m. March 19, Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara said. The officers pulled over the vehicle at Orchard and Thomas Street and asked the driver for his registration and license. No charges will be filed or summonses issued against the driver of a truck that leaked a 3-mile slick of used vegetable oil in Newark's Ironbound last week, police said. As it passed through the area around 3:40 p.m. Oct. 15, the truck left behind a trail on Wilson Avenue and on Stockton, Delancy, Adams and Thomas streets, snarling traffic as Hazmat teams covered the oil with sand. A Virginia-based law enforcement organization said Monday it will pay the legal expenses for Jovanny Crespo, a Newark police officer facing life in prison for shooting and killing a fleeing criminal suspect early this year. Newark Police Officer Indicted In Fatal Shooting Following High-Speed Chase
A Newark police officer has been indicted on manslaughter, assault, official misconduct and other charges for shooting and killing a fleeing suspect earlier this year, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office announced Tuesday night. Crespo was being held at the Essex County jail and was expected to make an initial court appearance tomorrow or Thursday.
