NJ Man Convicted Of Beating Mom To Death, Prosecutor Says
A 38-year-old Maplewood resident was convicted on Monday, Oct. 21 of murder charges in his mother's death, which he then framed as a suicide, authorities said. Benjamin Avrut was found guilty of first-degree murder after beating his 70-year-old-mothe Gwen to death, Prosecutor Theodore Stephens said. The jury had rejected Avrut's insanity defense. Newark Man Convicted Of Severely Beating Girlfriend
A Newark man faces up to five years in state prison after he was convicted of beating his girlfriend in 2019, sending her to the hospital, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens announced. Ahmir Worthy was found guilty on Thursday, April 27, of third degree aggravated assault following a three-day trial, after prosecutors say he punched, kicked and slammed his girlfriend against the wall while at a party. She was diagnosed with a concussion, and suffered contusions and deep bruising, Stephens said. Worthy will be sentenced on June 26, Stephens said.

Newark Man Convicted In Fatal Stabbing
A 57-year-old Newark man was convicted of aggravated manslaughter for fatally stabbing another man in July 2020. Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens announced the jury's conviction of Lance Boone on Friday, March 31. Boone was panhandling on Market Street and McCarter Highway when he got into an altercation with Rashon Williams, a 43-year-old Newark resident, who was also panhandling in the area, Stephens said. Boone then used a kitchen knife to fatally stab Williams in the heart, Stephens said. Boone faces up to 30 years in New Jersey State Prison when he is sentenced in June.

UPDATE: An East Orange man wanted for shooting two Newark police officers, has been captured after a massive search, sources tell Daily Voice. Kendall Howard was arrested Wednesday morning by Newark police on two attempted murder charges, sources with direct knowledge of the incident say. Authorities are investigating the April death of a Newark trans woman after months calls for action by activists and community members, authorities announced Tuesday. Ashley Moore's death had been ruled a suicide after she was found unresponsive lying on the sidewalk in front of the YMCA on Broad Street around 4:10 a.m. April 1, Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F.
