Lawmakers in a New York county approved a controversial bill criminalizing mask wearing amid a summer bump in COVID-19 cases. On Long Island, the Republican-controlled Nassau County Legislature passed the “Mask Transparency Act” by a vote of 12-0 on Monday night, Aug. 5. All seven Democrats abstained from voting. A reported 33 people have died at a Park Ridge nursing home since the coronavirus pandemic began while 21 others who’ve tested positive for COVID-19 were transferred to a facility in South Jersey. An Atlantic County man in his 60s tested positive for the coronavirus, marking the county’s first positive test for COVID-19, officials said. The man, whose name was not released, has underlying health conditions and was asked to self-quarantine at home for 14 days, Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson said in a statement.
