Car Thieves Attempted To Carjack Mercedes At Gas Station: Newark PD
Car thieves driving a vehicle stolen out of East Orange attempted to carjack a Mercedes Benz in Newark on the afternoon of Sunday, Aug. 11, authorities said. The suspects were driving a stolen 2020 BMW from East Orange into Newark, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé said. At 12:05 p.m., the suspects attempted to carjack another victim's Mercedes Benz from the Mobil gas station at Frelinghuysen Avenue and Meeker Avenue before fleeing in their BMW, Fragé said. A 22-year-old Jersey City man faces up to 30 years in prison after he was recently convicted of an armed carjacking and robbery that occurred in 2022, authorities said. A teenager is at large after attempting a carjacking in Maplewood on Thursday, July 11. At 8:55 p.m., officers received a report of an attempted carjacking at a Springfield Avenue business, Maplewood police said in a release. While a man was placing air in their vehicle's tires, a teenage boy entered the vehicle in an attempt to steal it, police said. A man was carjacked at gunpoint on the early morning of Wednesday, June 26, authorities said. At 5 a.m., a man was parked on the 700 block of South 17th Street when he was approached by a Black man, wearing a black sweater and black face mask and brandishing a firearm, who opened his driver-side door and demanded he get out of the vehicle, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said.
