Family Of Beloved Westfield Principal Suing Hospital Over His Death
Family of the Westfield High School principal who died following an attempt to harvest his bone marrow for donation are suing Hackensack University Medical Center. Derrick Nelson, a 20-year veteran of the Army reserves, was planning on making the donation to a French teenager. Flags To Be Lowered For Westfield Principal Who Died After Marrow Donation
Gov. Phil Murphy has ordered that U.S. and state flags be flown at half-staff Monday in honor of Dr. Derrick Nelson, the principal of Westfield High School who died April 7 following a bone marrow donation several weeks earlier. Dr. Derrick Nelson, the beloved Westfield High School principal who died Sunday night, had fallen into a coma after a bone marrow donation procedure, NJ.com reported Tuesday. Nelson agreed to undergo the procedure to help a 14-year-old in France, according to an account in the school's newspaper. Nelson, 44, who was named principal in 2017, had served in the district's schools for several years. He had also worked in the Plainfield and Orange schools before coming to Westfield.
