The restaurant made the announcement on Facebook on Friday, June 2. Its last day was Sunday June 4.
Patrons were saddened by the closure.
"This restaurant is part of what made The Ironbound popular," said one Facebook commenter. "It's so sad that the Portuguese community has slowly disappeared from the area. We all grow old and changes need to happen but it's not easy to see this place go."
"Truly an icon of the Newark restaurant world, a true life accomplishment," said another commenter. "Something to be very proud of, we will miss you but congratulations on your well deserved retirement you have touched lives and given many happy memories."
