Coy Jones, 64, of Calhoun, was parked on the Rt. 22 service road around 11:15 a.m. Sunday. Sheriff's officers approached his Ford pickup when they noticed the vehicle had a Texas license plate in the front and a Georgia plate in the back, Fontoura said.
Calhoun told officers he had a loaded .40-caliber Smith and Wesson handgun in a driver's side door compartment. Another magazine and a box of bullets were also found. Most of the ammunition consisted of illegal hollow-point bullets, Fontoura said.
Jones was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of hollow point bullets. He was also issued motor vehicle summonses for fictitious license plates and failure to produce a vehicle registration card.
He was being held at the Essex County jail.
