A two-story Vermont Avenue building went up in flames around 6 a.m., Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said.

A female firefighter was treated after she fell and hurt her back, and a building resident was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, Ambrose said.

The blaze was under control by 6:40 a.m. and is being investigated by the Newark Fire Division’s Arson Unit.

The American Red Cross is working with the four displaced families.
