The 17-year-old succumbed to the sudden effect of AML Leukemia, which began Christmas night, his obituary says.

Robbie grew up playing lacrosse, football and basketball. A senior at Millburn High School, Robbie played for the Millers and the NJ Riot Club team, and was also a trumpet player.

Robbie planned on playing lacrosse for the Union College Dutchmen next year. He had a close-knit group of friends and will be sorely missed, his obituary says.

The Robbie Almgren Athletic Scholarship Fund was established by friends and family as a tribute to memory of Robbie.

"Robbie was a down-to-earth, humble, warm-hearted and loyal friend to all who crossed his path," the mission statement reads.

"He was a uniquely-talented athlete who not only excelled in every sport he played but also was a model of true sportsmanship and leadership."

An annual scholarship will be awarded to a senior at Millburn High School who has committed to a college athletic program and who embodies the character and spirit of Robbie.

Checks can be made out to the Robbie Almgren Athletic Scholarship Fund and can be mailed to: Millburn Quickstik Club PO Box 302, Short Hills, New Jersey 07078 c/o Robbie Almgren Athletic Scholarship Fund.

Robbie is survived by his parents Laura and Bob; sister Reilly; grandmother Jackie O’Donnell; aunts, uncles and cousins; and his old English Sheepdog Winston.

Visitation will be Jan. 1 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., at the Wm. A. Bradley & Son Funeral Home, in Chatham.
