The longtime Newark resident, who is affectionally known as Ken Love or Pope, has been dealing with health issues related to diabetes and issues with his kidneys since Dec. 2021. He has spent 28 years as a track supervisor for the MTA.
Pope's health issues have forced him to have to relearn how to walk again. A fundraiser has been created to assist Pope with his medical expenses, most of which are not covered by insurance. As of Thursday, July 20, more than $10,000 has been raised.
Pope is hoping to use the money to hire a full-time health aid and see a physical therapist four times a week to help restore his muscle strength.
"The out-of-pocket cost to cover this, as you can only imagine, is an enormous financial and emotional strain on my family," Pope said. "I want to continue [my] progress now that I am home."
