Khalil Hardaway was living in a first floor apartment on South 11th Street where the fire originated, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said. He was a disabled individual with limited mobility, authorities said. Hardaway was pronounced dead at the scene after firefighters attempted lifesaving measures, authorities said.
A pit bull also died in the fire, authorities said. The Red Cross assisted with relocating affected residents, authorities said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, authorities said.
