Two people were arrested for two different shoplifting incidents, attempting to steal hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise from the store, Fairfield police said.
Police were dispatched to Target that afternoon for a report of a shoplifter in custody, officers said. While shopping, Catherine Bustamonte, a 36-year-old Paterson resident, placed several items in a black duffel bag and placed other items in a shopping cart, police said. At the register, she only paid for the items in the cart. She attempted to steal $357 worth of items, police said.
Bustamonte was charged with shoplifting and released pending a court appearance in August, police said.
A few hours later, police were called back to Target for another shoplifter in custody. Javon Padilla, a 33-year-old Newark resident, attempted to conceal packs of cards from a board game and only paid some items that were in his shopping cart before being detained by security, police said. He attempted to steal $797.49 worth of merchandise, police said.
Padilla was charged with shoplifting and hindering and was transported to Essex County jail pending a court appearance.
