Officers responded to Care One at 800 River Road in New Milford—formerly known as Woodcrest—at 6:08 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, after receiving reports of an injured patient outside the building, according to Police Chief Brian Clancy.

Lt. Bryan Mone and Officers Gary Lewis, Dan O’Neill, and Tom Foschini arrived to find the man conscious but injured, Clancy said. He was discovered in the bushes on the north side of the building, complaining of pain in his head and legs, the chief said.

Despite the three-story fall, the shrubbery helped soften the impact, police said. The man suffered a minor head injury and moderate leg injuries, possibly including broken bones, Clancy said.

Lt. Haggerty and Detective Sgt. Mattessich investigated the incident and determined that the patient had tampered with the window and safety bars before jumping, the chief said.

While receiving medical aid, the patient confirmed to officers that he had jumped, police said.

Emergency medical responders from Englewood Hospital EMS treated the man at the scene before transporting him to Hackensack University Medical Center, Clancy said.

Care One locked the patient’s room and reported that it will remain off-limits until an investigation is conducted by the New Jersey Department of Health, according to Clancy.
