Rutgers University research professor Andrew Brooks, who played an integral role in the development of the first approved COVID-19 saliva test, died suddenly over the weekend. A new drive-thru coronavirus test site will open next week in Piscataway, county officials said. Middlesex County will close its two drive-thru testing facilities in Edison and South Brunswick to allow the state Department of Motor Vehicles to reopen, officials said. Middlesex County will be among the first locations to offer coronavirus tests to people without obvious symptoms, to see if they've been exposed to COVID-19. Starting Wednesday, May 20, county residents can be tested in Edison's drive-thru site -- with or without COVID-19 symptoms, which often include runny nose, high fever and coughing. After a month of testing for coronavirus, Middlesex County is encouraging all residents with symptoms to take advantage of the free tests. UPDATE: The county announced it will begin offering COVID-19 tests to all residents, even if they have no obvious symptoms starting on Wednesday, May 20. Rapid-response tests for coronavirus began in mid-April. A new walk-up, coronavirus saliva-testing site will open this week in New Brunswick, officials said. Starting Thursday and Friday, the coronavirus spit test will be offered in New Brunswick from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The appointment-only testing site will open at the A.C. Redshaw Elementary School, 216 Livingston Ave., in New Brunswick. The saliva tests are only available to Middlesex County residents.
