UPDATE: A Paterson fire captain got two sleeping residents to safety early Sunday before flames blew through the roof of a string of attached homes anchored by a Greek restaurant, authorities said. The fire broke between a parked van and the 2½-story, wood-frame Berkshire Street building off Union Avenue shortly before 7 a.m., Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale said. Elmwood Park Police Chief Michael Foligno used a shovel and a borrowed kayak to pull a 2-year-old girl and her mother from the frigid Passaic River Thursday afternoon. A Howell Township patrol officer saved a driver from a burning car on Saturday night, authorities said. Police Officer Nicholas Volpe spotted the car, which was fully engulfed in flames, on Manassa Road about 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, Howell police said. The U.S. Coast Guard rescued two fishermen after their boat caught fire approximately 34 miles off the Jersey Shore Thursday (click here for video).
