Darryl Mathis Jr., aka Maybach Swagg, of Elizabeth, was heading home from a gig in the city with rapper Rick Ross when his Crown Victoria stalled in the southbound lanes near West Fordham Road, according to the New York Daily News.

Mathis called a friend around 3:15 a.m. on Saturday, March 22, saying he needed a jump, the outlet said. Roughly 30 minutes later, he called them again—with devastating news: he had just been hit, the outlet said.

At 3:46 a.m., NYPD officers responded to a 911 call for a crash on the Major Deegan Expressway, near the Fordham Road exit, the NYPD said in a statement.

A preliminary investigation found that Mathis was operating a disabled Crown Vic when a Mercedes-Benz sedan heading southbound slammed into the back of his vehicle, the NYPD said. The driver of the Mercedes took off on foot, police said. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing, the NYPD said.

EMS rushed Mathis to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the NYPD.

Those who knew Mathis said he was a brand ambassador for Maybach Music Group, a company run by Rick Ross.

Services will be held Thursday, March 27 at the Islamic Burial Services LLC in Newark, with burial at the Restland Cemetery in East Hanover.
