A Garfield man who'd been missing for nearly a week turned up a short time after authorities turned to the public for help finding him, police said. Charles Jeter Jr., 39, had been reported missing by his family after last seeing him at his Garfield Avenue home around 7 p.m. Feb. 22, police Capt. Richard Uram said. Police issued an alert on Monday, Feb. 28.On Tuesday, Uram announced that Jeter had returned home.

A Garfield police officer captured a carjacker moments after he took a sedan as the owner warmed it up early Friday, authorities said. A woman who left her 4-year-old child alone in a car in a handicapped spot outside the Walmart in Garfield was jailed after kicking a police officer, authorities said. Officer Marlene Martinez found the unattended youngster in a rear child seat, with the driver's side door unlocked, after not seeing a handicapped placard shortly after 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Capt. UPDATE: Fierce frigid winds fanned a furious fire that engulfed one home and damaged another Monday night in Garfield, displacing 13 residents. Two cats were rescued, as well.
