Current, Former Wildwood Mayors, Commissioner Charged With Scamming Health Benefits Program
The city of Wildwood’s former and current mayor and a city commissioner broke the law – committing “breaches of the public trust” -- by collecting health benefits that they didn’t earn, state authorities said Friday. Wildwood Mayor Peter J. Byron, former Mayor Ernest V. Troiano Jr., and current City Commissioner Steven E. Mikulski were charged criminally for fraudulently participating in the State Health Benefits Program (SHBP), Acting New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin said. Flames Swallow Wildwood's Windward Motel
Flames swept through a Wildwood motel causing nearly $500,000 in damages Tuesday, June 14. Squads arrived to the Ocean Avenue motel around 11:30 a.m. as the fire consumed the second floor. Firefighters cut a trench cut in the roof of the motel to help contain the blaze, which was under control in about 90 minutes. The cause was deemed accidental and no injuries were reported.

Hearts Break Over Missing Wildwood Swimmer: PA's Alfred Williams Believed Drowned
Hearts shattered when the news broke that a missing swimmer off the Wildwood coast from Pennsylvania was believed to have drowned late last month. Three swimmers were rescued or found their way out of the waters while Alfred Williams, 19, of Drexel Hill, remained missing Tuesday, May 31, Wildwood Police Chief Robert Regalbuto and Wildwood Fire Chief Ernie Troiano III said. Residents of a South Jersey town were evacuated after a live explosive was found on the beach, authorities said. A Wildwood resident found the World War II-era projectile on the beach and brought it to a nearby home, police said. A man wanted for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl is being sought by New Jersey State Police. Police are seeking the public's help in locating Emeterio Alavez-Cruz, 30, of Pilesgrove Township, they said. Emeterio is described as a Hispanic male, approximately 5’6” tall and 150 pounds. He has connections to the Rio Grande, Wildwood, Bridgeton City, Penns Grove and New Castle, Delaware areas. Wildwood Crews Rescue Distressed Nighttime Swimmers
A pair of swimmers were rescued by crews in Wildwood last Friday night. The two went in the water after regular guards had finished their shift and after-hour crews were leaving for the night, NJ Advance Media reports. One person was airlifted in serious condition in a Wildwood boat fire Saturday. Arriving firefighters were flagged down to help a burn victim who was brought to a nearby business as flames ravaged the 40-foot pleasure vessel docked in the 400 block of Dock Street around 10:30 a.m., fire officials said. A 6-year-old boy drowned in a Wildwood hotel pool over the Fourth of July weekend. Police responded to Beachside Resort on Atlantic Avenue for a possible drowning with CPR in progress around 6:30 p.m. July 3, the Wildwood police and fire departments said in a joint police.
