Authorities are seeking two men wanted for assaulting an NJ Transit bus driver who wouldn't accept a used bus ticket. The bus was stopped at Lenox Street and Sanford Avenue in Newark, where the driver told police that a man got on the bus and handed him a ticket that had already been used around 7:15 p.m. July 21, Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara said. Both suspects spit on the driver because he refused to drive, and the second threw a bottle at his head, causing a gash, authorities said. UPDATE: An ex-con who attacked a postal carrier with a box cutter while carjacking her SUV is headed to federal prison for more than 6½ years. Wallace Johnson, 32, of Newark, must spend just about all of the 82 months because there's no parole in the federal prison system. : $10K Offered In Newark Killing Of Juvenile Detention Officer
A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to arrests in the Newark killing of a juvenile detention center officer. Laquan Nowlin, 32, of East Orange, was sitting in his car at the intersection of Lanark and Sanford Avenue when he was shot by a man who got out of the passenger seat of a dark-colored sedan July 3, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II said in a joint release. The shooter got back in the car and the driver fled southbound on Sanford Avenue, Stephens said. An NJ Transit bus driver from Bloomfield was arrested Tuesday while trying to board a plane at Newark Airport in connection with the hit-and-run death of a pedestrian late last year, authorities said. Fayola Howard, 34, dragged 55-year-old Kevin Thomas on Sanford Avenue approaching Mt. Vernon Place in Newark on Dec. 29, 2019, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said. Thomas died of his injuries on Jan. 6. Howard is facing charges of vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident with an injured person.
