Police Rescue Man, Unconscious Woman From Smoky Morris County Apartment Blaze
Firefighters in Morris County acted fast when they were called to the scene of a Morris County apartment fire, resulting in the brave rescue of a man and an unconscious woman trapped inside. The fire broke out around 11:20 p.m. Friday at a multi-unit building on Route 46 in Ledgewood, Roxbury Township police said. Upon arriving at the scene, Roxbury Police Sgt. Ken Rocco, Ptl. Jon Edmunds and Ptl. Nick Ponomarev were met with smoky conditions and nearby residents shouting that there were still people inside the apartment, the department said. Elmwood Park Police Chief Michael Foligno used a shovel and a borrowed kayak to pull a 2-year-old girl and her mother from the frigid Passaic River Thursday afternoon. Using the shovel to propel himself, Foligno pushed his way about 75 yards into the river, Detective Capt. Mark D'Amore said. Four Cats, Dog Rescued, Other Perish In Garfield House Fire
Four cats and a dog were rescued while others perished in a two-family house fire Sunday afternoon in Garfield. No other injuries were reported in the two-alarm fire, which displaced six residents from the two apartments, one of which apparently housed rescued pets, responders said. The fire broke out on the second floor of the 2½-story Pacific Avenue home around 1 p.m. It was knocked down within 20 or minutes and declared under control a little over an hour later. A Howell Township patrol officer saved a driver from a burning car on Saturday night, authorities said. Police Officer Nicholas Volpe spotted the car, which was fully engulfed in flames, on Manassa Road about 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, Howell police said. The U.S. Coast Guard rescued two fishermen after their boat caught fire approximately 34 miles off the Jersey Shore Thursday (click here for video). An off-duty Hackensack firefighter pulled a local driver through the window of a pickup truck and helped resuscitate him following a crash on Route 80 in Elmwood Park, authorities said.
